During slow times, such as these, there is a lot of pressure on all of us to keep working to support our families. Here at Local 110 the Officers and Staff are sympathetic to the stresses of those who are looking for work. We understand the frustration that sometimes comes out as anger, not only towards the Officers and Staff but also towards Traveler members who remain working in Alberta.

Since January, at every union meeting, Members have been asking about Travelers working in the province and want to know why they are still here with such a large number of Local 110 Journeyman on our unemployed list. This is why I find it confusing that again today Local 110 has dispatched two Journeyman Travelers, as no members called in for the calls. With 534 journeymen on the unemployed list, not one Local 110 Journeyman put their name forward for these jobs. Having listened to the desperate situations, that some of our members claim to be in, like being in the position of  losing their vehicles, not being able to pay their  bills (including what is owed to Local 110 in dues, fines and mortuary), or losing their homes, for our Local to have Travelers fill our contractors manpower needs is unfathomable and extremely disheartening.

Last year I posted in the Business Manager updates about how our Members need to fill the outstanding calls as companies have the right to fill the calls as they see fit if the Local is unable to fill the manpower requests. Once again, our Local finds itself in the same situation. It is our Local’s responsibility to fill these calls and I would prefer to have them filled with Local 110 members, but when none of our Members are willing to take the work, Travelers are traditionally dispatched next, after that, permits.

Next month, at the General Membership Meeting, when Agent Johnson reads out the number of Travelers working in our jurisdiction, and it has risen from last month, please remember that these Travelers are keeping these jobs union and filling the positions that our Members are not interested in manning.

This is an excellent opportunity to not only give our children the positive life experience of going to summer camp and meeting new people but also to provide them with some education on the labour movement in Alberta.

For tomorrow’s delegate nominations for the upcoming Canadian Conference & International Convention. As per the review of the Election Committee, the following members have met the requirements according to the International Constitution and Bylaws:

Article V Conventions, Section 6; “The President, Business Manager, Business Agents (if elected), and all full-time Officers and the Vice President will automatically, by virtue of their office, be delegates to the International Convention, provided that the provision for these combined offices shall not increase the number of delegates otherwise provided for by Section 4 of this Article. If the number of those serving in the offices listed above exceeds the number of delegates to which a local union is entitled, Officers shall be selected as delegates in the order listed in this paragraph. Additional International convention delegates and alternates must be nominated and elected at meetings of their local unions. Except in asbestos abatement regional local unions, a member, to be eligible, must have been a member of our International Association for five (5) years, must have worked as a mechanic for at least two (2) years and shall have been in continuous good standing for two (2) years and in attendance at a majority of the regular local union meetings held during the past twelve (12) months prior to date of nomination for convention delegates.”

Please take note of Local 110 Bylaws Section 19- all requirements of this section must be met before being issued membership in Local 110.

SECTION 19 –MEMBERSHIP

1. Any member who applies to join Local 110, if they are accepted, will pay an initiation fee in the amount of one hundred dollars ($100.00),plus membership card fee, excepting that:

Those members who lapse out of the union from October 23, 2004 and after, will pay an additional amount of money which equals the amount owed for union dues and fines at the time of lapsing, plus a $200.00 reinstatement fee, to reinstate their membership. This amount must be paid in full not more than 30 calendar days from the date of the vote of acceptance by the general membership. The insulator who fails to pay the full amount owing within this time will not be reinstated as a member and will have to reapply for membership.

2. Any individual that makes application to Local 110 and is rejected by vote of the membership.

• First rejection they will not be able to make new application for a minimum 3 calendar months.
• Second rejection they will not be able to make new application for a minimum of 6 calendar months.
• Third or more rejections they will not be able to make new application for a minimum of 12 calendar months.

3. All new members, including members who are transferring their membership to Local 110 must complete New Member Orientation within 180 days from the date they were voted into Local 110 or their membership is void and they will have to reapply for membership.
4. New member orientation will be held in Edmonton and Calgary once every month and in Red Deer and Fort McMurry once every two months.
5. Permit members and Travel Card members requesting membership will not receive their union card and Local 110 will not accept a transfer card, until after the member has taken the oath of membership referred to in the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Constitution at the New Member Orientation.

Generations of right-wing governments in Alberta have stacked the deck against working people in our province, leaving us with one-sided workplace rules that favour employers at the expense of employees.

The Government of Alberta is in the process of reviewing and updating our workplace laws. As the first progressive government in Alberta since the 1920s, the NDP has an opportunity to unstack the deck and level the playing field by giving Albertans an Employment Standards Code with real teeth and a Labour Relations Code that allows people to exercise their constitutional right to join unions and bargain collectively.
