Alberta Mask Requirement

Good day Union Family,

As of September 4, 2021, the Alberta Provincial Government has made it mandatory for face masks to be warn in all indoor public spaces and workplaces. As such all Members and Visitors to the Edmonton and Calgary Union Halls must wear a face mask during their time in the office.

As before we are still encouraging our Members to do as much business as possible through the website or on the phone. However, if you need to come to the office, we are open for business and are continuing with proper mask protocols, social distancing, and additional clean. There is also hand sanitizer and wipes available. Everyone is encouraged to make an appointment before coming to the hall to ensure the person you wish to meet with is available.

First Year Insulation School

Good day Union Family,

In 2015 Local 110 started an eight-week Pre-Trades program.  The reason for this was twofold. One, our Contractors were not utilizing first year apprentices, so we had to provide training to starters, so they were safe and productive from the first day onsite. Two, this program was the first step to brining Alberta Apprenticeship Training in house for the Local.

I am happy to announce that after a lot of work by our Training Coordinators and Local 110 Officers, we now have authorization through Alberta Industry Training (AIT) to provide First Year Apprenticeship Training through our Training Center. This course is instructed by Local 110 Training Coordinators and the Provincial Final Exam will be administered by AIT at the end of the course.

The inaugural First year class will be held August of this year. If interested, please contact Dan Annett or Phil Poirier at the Edmonton Training Center.

COVID Isolation

Good day Union Family

Unfortunately, with over a year past since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic we are still dealing with on going impacts to our lives both at home and at work.

A number of Local 110 Members have contracted COVID 19 on the job site and for the most part have been able to be compensated through WCB for the lost time. However, hundreds more have been put into extended isolation in camp due to close contact. This time has not been compensated and when asked the Contractors and Clients refer Members to file for benefits through CERB or Employment Insurance. If the isolation is as simple as having some time off work then this is the correct answer. However, for a number of Members the mental and emotional impacts of isolation, due to COVID exposure on the job site, could be a compensable injury under WCB. As such this time in isolation could be and should be properly compensated through WCB.

Mental health is not commonly discussed in the Construction Industry. However, the excessive mental stress that is being placed on workers needs to be addressed, in doing so proper services can be provided to ensure future mental health and proper compensation can be provided. This does not just apply to Members that are currently being held in isolation. Members that have completed isolation and have returned to work should also apply for services.

If any Member feels this situation applies to them, please make an appointment with your doctor, and then contact me at the Edmonton Union hall so I can assist in moving a WCB claim forward.

2021 Mortuary

Good day Union Family

There are still a number of Members that have not paid the 2021 Mortuary Plan Assessment. The payment for the Mortuary Plan is due April 30, 2021. Local 110 had a total of 18 Members pass away last year, as such the Mortuary Plan Assessment for 2021 is $180.00.

I know that times are difficult right now and there are a number of reasons to not pay the assessment. However, the Mortuary Fund is one of the fastest paying and cheapest death benefit a Member can have, even if you have life insurance it’s always better to have more. The Mortuary Plan is not a cost being levied against the Member it is a service being provided by the Local for your family.

National Day of Mourning 2021

Good day Union Family

Wednesday April 28, 2021 is the National Day of Mourning. This day is observed in over 80 Countries around the World as a time to remember workers killed, injured, or suffering due to a workplace hazard or occupational exposure. This year in Alberta there has been 150 occupation related deaths, a number of these were due to Asbestos and other exposures from decades prior.

Although the National Day of Mourning is a time of remembrance, it is also a time to renew our commitment to health and safety. Like the old saying goes “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, although this was originally said in regard to fires it is relevant in our daily working life. As Mechanical Insulators we have accepted additional health hazards that other tradespeople normally do not have to deal with. However, for the most part we have clear knowledge of the products we are working with and are provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure a barrier to keep the hazard out. As workers we must ensure that we prevent exposures, to ourselves and others, because there really is no cure.

Again, this year in person Day of Mourning events have been cancelled or moved onto social media, due to the ongoing COVID 19 Pandemic. I am sure that some job sites will highlight the day in some way, but if you are able please at 11:00 am Wednesday April 28, 2021 take a moment of silence for reflection on those who have past, the families left behind, and your personal commitment to safety.

Stay vigilant, stay safe, and look out for each other.
