Update Suncor

Oil Sands Evacuation Update for Sunday, May 8, 2016

Update: 9:15 p.m.

As forest fires continue in Wood Buffalo, Suncor remains focused on the safety of the community, our employees and their families.

Although the fire reached the southern end of our mine at our oil sands base operations, fire mitigation efforts were successful. We continue to monitor the situation closely and current weather conditions and forecasts indicate the fire is moving east, away from our operations.

There has been no damage to Suncor’s assets. We are beginning to implement our plan for a return to operations in the RMWB. We anticipate restarting once it’s safe to do so and depending on the availability of critical infrastructure.

Employees and contractors will be brought back in a staged approach so that we can ensure a safe and orderly start-up, and medical services are being put in place to support our operations. We’ll also be re-mobilizing our contractor workforce and resuming the turnaround that was underway.

Update Aluma Syncrude

We hope this post finds everyone safe and out of harm’s way from the fires. We are confident that all Aluma employees from the Syncrude site have been evacuated and are safe. We would like to thank all who helped with the Fort McMurray fire disastor, from those who gave up their camp rooms for the evacuated families, to those that manned the phones, the liaisons between camps, and everyone else who did their part in this time of crisis.

We would also like to thank those who are continuing to help in other parts of the province and country by opening their homes and hearts by providing food, shelter, transportation and comfort for those in need.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who are residents of Ft McMurray and hope this post finds them and their families safe.

We ask anyone who has not done so, to contact their families of their whereabouts.

What Now??

On Friday night we were informed that Syncrude will be bringing down its plant and taking it off line. They have procedures to do this safely, and when the time comes, to bring it back online safely. At this time, with the uncertainty of the fires, they have no timeline for startup. Once the region becomes more stable, there will be more information.

We will not be issuing Lay Offs for our employees at this time, we encourage everyone to use the below link, set up especially for Ft McMurray evacuees, to start their Employment Insurance claims.

Go to: Government of Canada Web Page

Search: Fort McMurray: Important Notice

With all of our management and admin team relocated across the province, our resources are limited, we are working at ensuring those who worked May 1-3 (Sun-Tues) will still receive their regular pay on Thursday May 12. All other questions will have to wait until we can regroup and execute a path forward.

Once again, thank you to all of you who helped and continue to help in this time of crisis.

Update from Shell

As Fort McMurray remains under a mandatory evacuation order, ensuring the safety of those directly affected and their families continues to be our first priority. We continue to evacuate all non-essential staff and other evacuees who are currently at our Albian site on flights to urban centres where resources and support await their arrival.

Shell emergency response teams on the ground in Fort McMurray continue to support local and provincial fire crews and we are donating fuel to first responders in the region. Production at our Shell Albian Sands mining operation (capacity 255,000 bbl/d) continues to be shut down so we can focus on the evacuation efforts. We do not have timelines for when production will resume.

“The dedication and level of care shown by all those who have worked tirelessly on the response efforts is nothing short of inspiring,” said Shell Executive Vice President Oil Sands, Zoe Yujnovich. “While our main focus continues to be on the safe evacuation our people and community members out of Albian, our thoughts are shifting to the longer term as to how we can support the community’s recovery and rebuild efforts. We are looking at ways we could safely resume some of our mining operations, however it’s too soon to say when this could happen.”

Background

  • The Albian site remains safe and secure. As a precaution we are working to enhance the fire mitigation and protection around our operating facilities.
  • More than 7,000 individuals have flown out of the Albian Aerodrome on more than 80 flights since May 3, via multiple airlines who have generously allotted planes and staff.
  • Air quality at site is being continuously monitored and remains at a safe level. We will continue to monitor.
  • Evacuated staff have been asked to get in touch with their supervisors to discuss next steps. We have also set up a phone line staff can call for information on recent developments.
  • An employee donation program has been set up with the Canadian Red Cross to be matched by Shell and the Alberta and Canadian governments.
  •

Regards
