SECTION 19 –MEMBERSHIP

1. Any member who applies to join Local 110, if they are accepted, will pay an initiation fee in the amount of one hundred dollars ($100.00),plus membership card fee, excepting that:

Those members who lapse out of the union from October 23, 2004 and after, will pay an additional amount of money which equals the amount owed for union dues and fines at the time of lapsing, plus a $200.00 reinstatement fee, to reinstate their membership. This amount must be paid in full not more than 30 calendar days from the date of the vote of acceptance by the general membership. The insulator who fails to pay the full amount owing within this time will not be reinstated as a member and will have to reapply for membership.

2. Any individual that makes application to Local 110 and is rejected by vote of the membership.

  • First rejection they will not be able to make new application for a minimum 3 calendar months.
  • Second rejection they will not be able to make new application for a minimum of 6 calendar months.
  • Third or more rejections they will not be able to make new application for a minimum of 12 calendar months.

3. All new members, including members who are transferring their membership to Local 110 must complete New Member Orientation within 180 days from the date they were voted into Local 110 or their membership is void and they will have to reapply for membership.

4. New member orientation will be held in Edmonton and Calgary once every month and in Red Deer and Fort McMurry once every two months.

5. Permit members and Travel Card members requesting membership will not receive their union card and Local 110 will not accept a transfer card, until after the member has taken the oath of membership referred to in the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Constitution at the New Member Orientation.

 

 

GPC/NMC Maintenance Agreement Negotiations Complete

Good day Brothers and Sisters

As all of you know the economic situation in Alberta has changed over the last few years. Fortunately for Local 110 we have been able to keep a large percentage of our members working in the Industrial maintenance sector. Long term partners such as Syncrude, Suncor, Shell Scotford, and Dow Fort Saskatchewan have helped this local through slow times in the past, and over the last few years, new clients such as Kearl Lake IOL, Surmont, Strathcona IOL and Dow Prentiss have been added to our maintenance portfolio, creating greater employment opportunities for Local 110 members.

The backbone of all long term union maintenance positions are the Collective Agreements. All maintenance work currently performed through Local 110 is done so under the terms and conditions of either the General Presidents Maintenance Agreement (GPMA) or the National Maintenance Agreement for Alberta (NMA). In the past these agreements have provided the members of Local 110 with industry leading working conditions and wages, while at the same time providing the client with a highly skilled and certified professional workforce and relative labour stability across all trades.

As previously mentioned, these agreements came up for renewal in December 2015. I have just recently been informed that these negotiations have been completed for both the NMA and GPMA. The NMA has been rolled over and all terms and conditions will stay the same for a minimum of one year. As for the GPMA a number of changes have been made and these changes come into effect April 3, 2016. Most changes are around Transfers, Earned Days Off, Local Resident Status and Over Time Pay. These changes will affect members working at Syncrude, Suncor, Surmont, Kearl Lake, McKay River, Dow Fort Saskatchewan, Dow Prentiss, Shell Scotford, Strathcona IOL, Fire Bag, Shell Chemicals, Shell Albian Sands, and CNRL.

A full review of the changes to the GPMA will happen at the April 9, 2016 Local 110 General Membership Meeting in Edmonton.

I strongly suggest that members be in attendance at this meeting especially those who work or are planning to work, in the Fort McMurray area.

ACTIMS Women In Trades Awards/Bursaries Program

The Women in Trades Awards/Bursaries Program was created to recognize women who are members of the Canadian Building Trades, and to bring awareness of employment oppertunities for women in the skilled trades.

This awards/bursaries program provides three recipients each with $1,500.00 for a total of $4,500.00 in awards:

  • 1 award of $1,500.00 to any woman journeyman who is part of a Building Trades Union
  • 2 bursaries of $1,500.00 each, to be given to 2 apprentice women who are members of the Building Trades Unions. Any 1st/2nd/3rd/4th year apprentice

Who is Eligible

Canadian women in trades (members of the Building Trades Unions) who demonstrate integrity, excellence, and leadership within the Maintenance/Construction trades industry.

Candidates who qualify will possess all of the below points;

  • Membership with a Union under the Building Trades
  • Integrity and Leadership within the industry
  • Excellence in their trade
  • Practive workplace safety
  • 1st/2nd/3rd/4th year Apprentice
  • or Journeyman status

Requirements

Applicants must complete the application form in entirety with attachments and mail or email to the ACTIMS office between the dates of February 1st through till April 30th.

Write Up:   

The applicant must write a paper describing that they possess or demonstrate the below points:

  • Integrity within the industry
  • Leadership in the workface
  • Excellence in their trade
  • Practice workplace safety

The write up must be signed off by their employer stating the information to be true in nature.

Reference Letter:

The applicant must provide a signed off reference letter from their current, or most recent employer.

How to Apply

To be eligible, applications and supporting documents must be received no later than April 30th.

Completed application package must contain:

  • Fully completed application form
  • Letter of recommendation from current, or most recent employer
  • Copy of Journeyman ticket or Apprentice Blue Book

New Face in the Local 110 Training Center

Good day Brothers and Sisters

I’d like to introduce you to our newest member of the Local 110 Training team. After an extensive application process Brother Stacy Edmondson has accepted our offer to become a Local 110 Training Coordinator.

His first day is Monday February 29, 2016. Please feel free to stop by or call to help welcome him to the team.

Stacy has fifteen years of experience in increasingly responsible roles within our trade at several companies. In his most recent position, Stacy was part of the supervision team for Safway Shell Scotford. His experience is enhanced with having obtained both a Red Seal and Blue Seal certification through Alberta Industry Training.

As Training Coordinator, Stacy will be working in tangent with Dan Annett to help make our Training Department as successful as possible. Stacy will be directly involved in these areas:

  • Direct training of members for both trade specific and safety training.
  • Providing study guides and help for apprenticeship training.
  • Developing course curriculum for the Training Department.
  • Researching and evaluating new product opportunities.
  • Journeyman upgrading.
  • Pre trades training.
  • Trade shows and recruiting.
  • Booking of outside training for members.
  • Updating information on the Local 110 training website.
  • Training trust administration and documentation.

I am confident that Stacy will be an asset to the Local and help in our efforts to keep the members of Local 110 the best trained, highest quality and most productive mechanical insulators in our industry.

Building Trades of Alberta Night at Rexall Place

Good day Brothers and Sisters

Once again this year the BTA is participating with the Edmonton Oil Kings for a Building Trades of Alberta Event. The goal of this event is to highlight the organization and all participating Local unions while ensuring all members and their families enjoy their experience at the game.

This year the Oil Kings will be taking on the Calgary Hitmen on Friday March 11, 2016 at 7:00 pm. As per the motion made at the general membership meeting, Local 110 has purchased a number of tickets for our members. These tickets can be picked up at the Edmonton union office 9335 – 47 street Edmonton Alberta.

All tickets not picked up by Friday March 4, 2016 will be donated to Kids Up Front Foundation. This group helps under privileged children attend sporting events in our area.

Local 110 is sad to announce the passing of Brother Denis Cote

Local 110 is sad to announce the passing of Brother Denis Cote

Local 110 is sad to announce  that Brother Denis Cote passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016. Brother Denis has been a Local 110 member since October 15, 1999. He last worked at Fuller Austin in December of 2015.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday January 29, 2016 at Mission View Funeral Chapel, 133 Sentinel Drive, Lac La Biche. In Lieu of flowes, donations to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated.

Calendars and Tax Packages

Local 110 Calendars will be mailed out with the year end packages in February. Please call the hall as soon as possible if you need to update your address so as not to delay the receipt of your tax package. Updating your address prior to the end of January would be best, as we are hoping to have the tax packages mailed out in early February. If you would prefer to come to the Union Hall in Edmonton to pick up your calendar in person you are more than welcome to do so. Please come upstairs to the window and the staff will be able to check off your name so we don't mail one out to you as well. Tax Packages, however, will NOT be available for pick up.

Local 110 is sad to announce the passing of Brother Fred Pelletier

Local 110 is sad to announce that Brother Fred Pelletier passed away Sunday January 10, 2016. Brother Fred has been a Local 110 member since April 29, 1968 . 

Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 at 12:00pm at the Yorkton Friendship Centre, 139 Dominion Ave in Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

Local 110 Officers, Staff and Members extend sincere condolences to all of Brother Fred's family and friends.
