Salting

Good day Local 110 Members

As most of you there is currently a number of members that have been working under Salting agreements with Local 110.

Recently however a number of available jobs from our signatory contractors have not been filled. As such the Union is required to pull back our members from Salting agreements to man the calls for our signatory contractors. To this end, Client Contractor Liaison Brandon Hammond will be contacting the members under salting agreements to cancel the agreement and fill the outstanding calls.

Direction has also been provided by our International Officers that the current Salting program does not correctly follow the mandate of Salting by the International, because of this the program will have a number of changes shorty. Additionally Salting will be significantly limited in the future.

If you have any question please contact Client Contractor Liaison Brandon Hammond or myself at the Edmonton union office.
Thank you

Kevin Lecht

Changes to Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training Scholarships

Yesterday, Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides announced exciting changes to Alberta’s Apprenticeship and Industry Training scholarships program. The new High School Apprenticeship Scholarship program triples the amount of funding available to $1.5 million, providing more students with access to the awards. The program, created as part of the government’s Skills for Jobs plan, is focused on increasing youth’s access to and interest in pursuing an apprenticeship post-secondary education.

The program offers students two scholarships:

The scholarships will be awarded to registered apprentices in the year they graduate from high school. These new scholarships will triple the capacity of the apprenticeship scholarship program, rewarding more high school students who have completed the required courses.

What does this mean for the scholarship associated with your donation?  A simple name change will replace “RAP” with “High School Apprenticeship” in the name of the scholarship. We have also implemented a fully automated procedure, eliminating the need for paper applications and manual processing.  Other criteria will stay the same at this time.

If you have questions or concerns with these new scholarships, please contact Melanie White, Recognition and Retention Supports Coordinator at 780-422-4472 or by email at melanie.white@gov.ab.ca.

Thank you for your support of Alberta’s apprenticeship and industry training program.
