December 2022 General Membership Meeting

Good day Union Family,

This is the last General Membership Meeting of 2022.

The General Membership Meeting is being held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday December 21, 2022. Members can attend at the Edmonton Union Hall, 9335-47 Street Edmonton, or at the Calgary Union Hall, 6165-6 Street Calgary, or at the OE Hall in Fort McMurray, 258 Gregoire Drive.

With the move to evening meetings, we hope to have more Member participation. Additionally, giving Members that live and work in the Fort McMurray area the ability to fully participate in the General Membership Meeting without having to travel to Edmonton or miss an overtime day will also bolster involvement.

If you have any questions, please contact me at the Edmonton Union office.

Commercial Health and Welfare/Pension

Good day Union Family

In late August Members were notified that the PITT fund would no longer be providing Health and Welfare/Pension RRSP contributions on behalf of the Contractors employing in the Commercial/Institutional Insulation sector. At that time all the Contractors made the choice to not make Health and Welfare contributions on behalf of the members work for them.

After extensive consultation with the Owner of ICON, Local 110 has been able to work out a system for the company to ensure that the members working for them will continue with health and welfare benefits through Local 110. Going forward ICON will be paying the base cost for every member working for them each month without being tied to the hours worked during the month. What does this mean for the member? If there are limited hours worked during the month, that would not normally allow for benefits in the month ICON will still pay the amount on behalf of the member to ensure that the benefits will continue for that month.

Currently, the wage rate in the Commercial sector is to a point that it is difficult to bring people into the sector. As such ICON has agreed to provide a contribution directly to the members base wage to make up for the pension contribution. This is a short-term solution, that will allow the members to have a higher base wage without the RRSP that was being provided by the PITT fund. In the future as the agreements move forward both Local 110 and the Owner of ICON are committed to bringing the commercial workers into the pension plan to ensure a future with a dignified retirement.

As of today, ICON is the only Commercial Contractor that has committed to providing these benefits to the members currently working for them. Every other Commercial Contractor has the ability to follow the process as ICON by contacting Local 110. There are some contractors that are trying to have members move towards a low-cost minimal coverage Blue Cross plan that will most likely not provide the required benefits for most of the members. If your contractor is not providing benefits, you are not getting the proper value for your work and bring your concerns to the company and the Union.

If you have questions, please contacted us at the Local 110 Union Hall.

Thank you

New Training Coordinator

Good day Brothers and Sisters

I’d like to introduce you to our newest member of the Local 110 Training team. After an extensive application process Sister Kassy McDowell has accepted our offer to become a Local 110 Training Coordinator.

Kassy has been a member of Local 110 since November 2008. She brings a background in teaching from her years as an instructor at NAIT for the Insulator program.

As Training Coordinator, Kassy will be working with Dan Annett to help make our Training Department as successful as possible. Kassy will be directly involved in these areas:

  • Direct training of members for both trade specific and safety training.
  • Providing study guides and help for apprenticeship training.
  • Developing course curriculum for the Training Department.
  • Researching and evaluating new product opportunities.
  • Journeyman upgrading.
  • Pre trades training.
  • Trade shows and recruiting.
  • Booking of outside training for members.
  • Updating information on the Local 110 training website.
  • Training trust administration and documentation.

I am confident that Kassy will be an asset to the Local and help in our efforts to keep the members of Local 110 the best trained, highest quality and most productive mechanical insulators in our industry.

Travel Cards November 23, 2022

Good day Union Family

As we all know there has been a sudden and significant amount of work being posted for Local 95 in Ontario, and there have been several Local 110 members that have taken travel cards to help man this work.

For the majority of members that have received travel cards they have been ineligible to work for the contractors or at the sites that are posted on our dispatch board, or they reside outside of Alberta. Unfortunately, there are numerous members that have been quitting jobs in Fort McMurray to be given site or company restrictions so that they could take a travel card. This is a practice that can no longer continue.

The Local must man the work in our jurisdiction first. As such if you quit or are fired Local 110 will not issue a travel card for you until one month after your last day employed.

I fully understand the reasons members are looking to work in other provinces. For the last few weeks, I was part of bargaining for the new GPMA and NMA contracts and although I do not believe they have addressed all the issues there are significant positive changes being made to start in January.

Regards,

Kevin Lecht

Local 110 Rope Access Committee

Good day Union Family,

At last nights General Membership Meeting a motion was made, seconded, and past for Local 110 to start a Rope Access Committee.

This Committee will focus on the unique challenges that are faced by Members working in the Rope Access sector of the Mechanical Insulation trade. While at the same time building recommendations on how the Local can grow in this part of the industry and attract additional Members to fill the growing need.

I have appointed Local 110 Vice President and Training Coordinator Dan Annett as Chair of this Committee and meetings will be held over Zoom and in person at the Edmonton Union Hall, on the First Monday bi-monthly starting with July 4, 2022. If you are interested in becoming a member of this committee please email your Name, Membership Number, and Contact information to KimberlyM@insulators110.com .

With robust member involvement I am sure this Committee will succeed and expand into the future. As Rope Access Work expands in most of our sister Locals across Canada, there may even be an opportunity to help develop similar Committees in those Locals and work collectively and collaboratively across the International.
