2023 Rudy Wiederspiel Golf Tournament

Good day Union Family

The Golf Balls are in for the 2023 Golf Tournament. Tickets are going fast this year, but we have been holding off selling them to nonmembers until May 29, 2023. If you are interested, please call the hall, or come down to secure your tickets, as we don’t want any members interested to miss out.

This year it will be held at the Edmonton Garrison Memorial Golf and Curling Club on Saturday July 22nd. Tickets are $110 dollars and will cover the round of golf, cart, and meal.

I would like to thank Agent Casemore and our Staff Members because without them this day would not be possible.

73 Anniversary

Good day Union Family,
May 1, 1950, Local 110 was officially chartered by the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers.

Although we have come a long way over the years, this Local has grown following the vision that started with a small group of insulators 73 years ago. Take pride in our work, provide a quality product, be compensated fairly, and provide a better future for those who come behind us. Every member needs to remember that this is more than a job or even a career, as a member of Local 110 you are helping build a legacy that will be past down to the next generation of Mechanical Insulator.

It’s fitting that today we are preparing to have our new Provincial Collective Agreement in place for May 7th. I am hopeful that with this new agreement and the changes that are in place our organization will have the ability to continue the path started so long ago and bring better working conditions and quality of life for more Mechanical Insulators here in Alberta.

Stay vigilant, stay safe, and look out for each other.

In Solidarity,

Kevin Lecht

. Ratification Vote

Good day Union Family

At 11:00 PM Wednesday April 26, 2023, voting closed for the new Provincial Construction Collective Agreement. This morning I was provided the results from BKY. This has been our most successful ratification vote in decades with 63.5% of Members retuning ballots. By majority vote the agreement has been accepted.

I was informed last week from the CLRA that the contractors also ratified the agreement. As such the changes will be starting as of May 7, 2023. For those Members working under the NMA/GPMA agreements the wage changes are being picked up by those agreements and the committee is working to have the rates updated before May 7th as well.

If you have any questions, please contact me at the Edmonton union hall.

Kevin Lecht

2023 Mortuary Plan Assessment

Good day Union Family

There are still a number of Members that have not paid the 2023 Mortuary Plan Assessment. The payment for the Mortuary Plan is due April 30, 2023. Local 110 had a total of 22 Members who passed away last year, as such the Mortuary Plan Assessment for 2023 is $220.00.

I know that times are difficult right now and there are a number of reasons to not pay the assessment. However, the Mortuary Fund is one of the fastest paying and cheapest death benefit a Member can have, even if you have life insurance it’s always better to have more. The Mortuary Plan is not a cost being levied against the Member, it is a service being provided by the Local for your family.

Friday April 28, 2023 Day of Mourning

Good day Union Family

Friday April 28, 2023 is the National Day of Mourning. This day is observed in over 80 Countries around the World as a time to remember workers killed, injured, or suffering due to a workplace hazard or occupational exposure. This year in Alberta there has been 161 occupation related deaths, a number of these were due to Asbestos and other exposures from decades prior.

This year there are several Day of Mourning services being held around the Province, I encourage all who are available to attend,

  • Agent Casemore will be attending in Fort McMurray Howard Pew Park (Waterways) starting at 10:45AM,
  • Agent Stock will be attending in Calgary at the City hall starting at 10:45
  • I will be attending in Edmonton Grant Notley Park, 116 street and 100 Ave starting at 11:00 AM,

Additionally, most sites will be marking the day in some way, but no matter where you are please, at 11:00 am Friday April 28, 2023 take a moment of silence for reflection on those who have past, the families left behind, and your personal commitment to safety.

Stay vigilant, stay safe, and look out for each other.

Ratification Meeting

Good day Union Family

As I reported to you earlier Local 110 has reached a Memorandum of Agreement with the CLRA. The next step is to have the agreement Ratified by the Membership of Local 110 and the Insulation Contractors under the CLRA.

The ratification meeting is being held Monday April 17 at 7:30 PM. Members may attend the meeting at the Edmonton or Calgary Union halls and at the OE 955 hall in Fort McMurray. Additionally, a zoom link will be blast  emailed to all Members so that they can join in from their personal electronic devices, if they are unable to attend one of the meetings. However, anyone that is not in attendance at the Edmonton, Calgary, or Fort McMurray location will not be able to ask questions about the agreement.

Questions can also be asked, and further clarification can be provided at the April General Membership Meeting being held on Wednesday April 19, 2023.

Brothers and Sisters,

In today’s stressful society we feel having a place for our members and their families to turn to for assistance is a necessity.  We are proud to announce the rollout of the Members Assistance Program (MAP) for the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers.  We have partnered with Perspectives and Youturn to bring a members assistance program that is available for use by every member and their family. The IMAP can be reached by calling or texting: 800-456-6327.

The website for the IMAP has multiple areas of assistance from skills training, care training, emotional well-being, legal forms, mental health, and substance abuse issues.  There are on-line and live person options with referrals if desired.

We will begin by having a link on our international website and eventually there will be a direct link available on your local’s app when we complete the roll out of those apps.  In the meantime you can access the website by using this link:   https://www.perspectivesltd.com/login and entering the username IMAP and password Perspectives or you can bypass the username and password by using this link: https://features.perspectivesltd.com/newContent.aspx?uID=imap&pwd=perspectives

The IMAP (Insulators Member Assistance Program) is available at no cost to each member and their family to access and benefit from; the program is available as a resource and support 24/7.

This will be an excellent tool for everyone to use and we hope that our entire membership will benefit from this program.  Please visit the website to see for yourself what it has to offer, and additional information will be forthcoming.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Terrence M. Larkin                                                            Robert W. Reap

Memorandum of Agreement

March 30, 2023

Good day Union Family

Since 2018, Local 110 has been working through the bargaining process with our Contractor’s Registered Employer Organization (REO) Construction Labour Relations Alberta (CLRA).

As everyone has heard over the last few years this round of bargaining has been significantly difficult for all trades. At our last General Membership meeting I reported that it was likely that an agreement would not be reached and since more than seventy five percent of trades had settled Local 110 would be getting an agreement through arbitration. I am happy to report that this is not the case.

As of this morning I have signed a completed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). Over the next few weeks all members will have a chance to vote on the agreement and information meetings will be set up. Once arrangements are made more information and dates will be provided.

I would like to thank the other members of the Local 110 bargaining committee, Doug Casemore, Stacy Edmondson, and Derek Stock, each one represented our members with the up most professionalism through a difficult process. Additional thanks to the CLRA representative and our contractors involved with the bargaining process. Lastly, thank you to the appointed mediator that helped guide and push both sides to get to a final MOA.

In Solidarity,
