Local 110 Staff Training

Good day Brothers and Sisters

It has come to my attention that one of our members has some concerns regarding the training provided to the staff here at Local 110.

During the last election, as part of my campaign letter, I said that I would work to have Local 110 staff trained and educated, so they can provide the most professional and highest quality service to our Membership. Building upon the staff contracts of 2013, where the Business Manager at the time added into the contracts that “any education or improvement course(s) that the staff member wished to take related to the business of the Union, the Union could choose to pay for all or part of the cost of the course and any terms that may apply” I added “Training” during the creation of the first ever budget for Local 110. This budget was approved by the Membership at the General Membership Meeting of February 6, 2016.

Since that time, the majority of the staff have made the effort to attend such training. It is an ongoing process that is open to all staff members. They are encouraged to approach either myself or the Office Manager, Cecilia, regarding any training they may feel would improve their skillset within their position and I feel that there have been great strides made to the quality of service provided to our members. The courses some of the staff have attended include – Assertiveness: Business Language That Works, Dealing with Difficult People, Leadership & Professionalism, Minute Taking, Organizational Behaviour, Human Resources Metrics, Human Resources Foundations and Labour and Employee Relations.

Any courses attended outside of regular working hours are not compensated with any sort of wage top up., these courses are attended on the staff’s own personal time. Costs for these courses have remained below budget and

I applaud their efforts in taking the time and working towards becoming stronger staff members of Local 110.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the Edmonton Union Hall.

In Solidarity,
